uccessful development of dramatic voices requires patience, perseverance, and a strong technical foundation from a skilled teacher. I am accepting a limited number of dramatic voices headed for professional careers into my studio. As a former leading singer of the San Francisco Opera, I bring years of stage experience as a leading dramatic singer throughout the United States and Europe, under conductors including Levine, Molinari-Pradelli, and Prêtre.
The first voice teacher I studied with as a young professional, Robert Weede, gave me some valuable advice. He told me that if I really wanted to learn how to sing, I should start teaching voice. What a wise man! This forced me to understand exactly what it was that I was doing vocally because I had to be able to demonstrate and explain it to my students. As I continued to study with different teachers over the years and was able to understand and demonstrate a technique that I felt had merit and really worked, I would eagerly pass it on to my students.
That was 35 years ago and I am still learning and passing it on. I have taught in many places in the USA and also in Europe. So far, it has been a most wonderful journey and an enlightening experience. I have had many students go on to enjoy long professional careers; some in opera, some in musical theater, and even some who decided to write their own music, record, and perform in clubs. I have also had students who decided to pursue other venues but who enjoy contributing to their communities with their talent. I am equally proud of all of them. Each has truly found their own voice. That's success!
My method of teaching is that of Bel Canto. A relaxed, dropped jaw, an inner yawn-sigh, a deep connection with the right kind and amount of air pressure in the body which, when released into a sound, produces the essence of the voice and the beautiful long legato phrase or extraordinarily clean coloratura and the opportunity for great emotional expression, diction, and dynamics.
